Human Rights and Progressivism

Monday, July 18th, 2016

Dear Friends,

It seems to me… progressives have never seen a human Right they don’t despise and want to get rid of. Their rhetoric and actions prove this. From their zealous attacks on the right of self defense, to their undermining of the freedom of religion, progressives show their absolute antipathy to human rights of every stripe. In their zealous crusade to rid government of the burden of having to labor under the odium of the people’s individual rights, progressives have rolled back the advancement of philosophy, humanity and government, to a time well before the Enlightenment. Progressives are only too happy to use human rights to destroy human rights however. They pick and choose who gets rights and who doesn’t, in an effort to undermine and corrode basic natural law, which is the font of all human rights. Progressives are never happier than when they are overseeing a genocide which makes them the antithesis of human hearted, making Progressivism and all progressives, diabolical.

All human rights come from natural law. Before governments were invented all human beings were created equal, had innate rights like, the right to self defense, the right to privacy, the right to own the fruits of their labor, the right to own property both personal and real as well as, the right to think and believe as each chooses. Government and powerful men stole those human rights by the sword. People were enslaved by those powerful men, who needed an excuse for their evil, so they came up with the theory of arbitrary rule. Once that had been thoroughly debunked, the powerful changed it to the rights of kings, today that philosophy has been renamed social justice. All in an attempt to destroy human rights to justify people being exploited as slaves. Which of course is the direct opposite of natural rights, or as Socrates called it, justice.

The right of self defense is their most important bugaboo. Progressives and indeed everyone who has a penchant for tyranny loathes the right to self defense. How can you enslave a person who is capable and willing to defend themselves and their children from your evil? The basic human right to self defense is the first right from which all others flow, for if one has no right to defend him or herself from the usurpations of a monster, than all other rights become null and void. Everywhere and every time human beings have been denied their basic human right of self defense, it has resulted in slavery, suffering and death, there are no historical examples where this is not true. From ancient China to the modern Syria masters had arms and slaves were disarmed. Before a person can be enslaved they must be disarmed whether by force or trickery. Now they are using trickery but soon progressives will become anxious and will resort to violence… as they always have.

Today progressive make a compelling case to get rid of basic human rights. They seek to control thought, whether by hate crimes or political correctness, progressives seek to control not only what we do, but what we think as well. The right to freedom of religion has been perverted to separation of church and state, which actually means the elevation of atheism, as the state religion. The right to privacy doesn’t exist in a surveillance state, where your every move is recorded and stored in a government data bank, for use against you when the elite see fit. Moreover, how can anyone argue, with a straight face, that we are protected in our personal papers and effects when government can hack into our phones, computers and phone conversations without warrant? Instead of “interpreting” our Constitution, as it was written and intended, progressives claim it is a “living breathing document,” which means they get to change it’s meaning arbitrarily, eviscerating the protections our Constitution is supposed to provide. What is most distressing is that a huge number of people fall for such chicanery.

Justice is not arbitrary rule no matter what they call it, freedom is never submission and humanity cannot be imposed by the state’s monopoly on violence. Our basic human rights come from God or nature but not and never government. Government is the opposite of freedom. While in a state of nature you can go out and kill a deer to feed your family, grow whatever crop you want to fill your children’s bellies, worship whatever deity you please, protect your family and self from thieves and murderers with violence if necessary, build a home, and think whatever you want, progressives always seeks to take these rights away. If you need permission from government… they have taken away your right to do it.

That progressives loathe and despise human rights is an open secret. Their every action serves to undermine human rights and humanity itself in the process… all in the name of “equality.” Progressive’s, socialist’s and Marxist’s version of equality, however, is where some people are more equal than others, to borrow a phrase. While they zealously defend their own “right” to control our thoughts, actions and religious beliefs, arbitrarily as in the rights of kings, they actively destroy those of everyone else. The quiet of Woodrow Wilson when the Armenians were being exterminated, FDR’s silence as Jews were being slaughtered on an industrial scale, and now Obama’s defense of those massacring Christians in their original lands, shows progressives, socialists and Marxists passion for genocide. The master has every right while the slave has not even the right to life. They hold us to every word of their law, constitutional or not, while openly arguing law doesn’t apply to them. Listen to what they say, consider what the outcome of their argument will be… exercise your basic human right to think, before it is taken away.

Sincerely,

John Pepin

Tragedy’s First Cause

Monday, June 13th, 2016

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, to exploit tragedy for personal gain is callous, to create a tragedy so one can exploit it… is downright evil. Those who are so dead inside they are willing to create the conditions where tragedy is impossible to avoid, know that most people don’t look beyond last cause, certainly not following the chain of causality back to the primary cause. As such they believe their actions can go unreported and unknown. Of course some will point to the primary cause. Those diabolical people who created the tragedy to begin with, have only to claim anyone who is rightly pointing at the primary cause, or first cause, are conspiracy theorists, and the fiction the connivers are peddling can go on, while those who point at their malevolence are marginalized as cooks. Much evil in our world has been implemented in just this manner. As rational maximisers, we have to be aware that such manipulation exists and look beyond last cause to the primary cause, before we lay blame.

Causality is always a chain of events. If a building collapses, we can look at the rotten support that failed, as the last cause, or we can look at what made the member rot in the first place, the first or primary cause. A conniver might claim the primary cause was the building design was faulty to begin with, ignoring the fact it stood decades or perhaps centuries, before the rotten timber gave and the building collapsed. If all we look at is the rotten timber we miss the root cause of the collapse, namely, whatever rotted the timber in the first place. Someone who is intent on manipulating us to their own selfish ends loves this lazy tendency of humanity. They can create the conditions where a structural collapse is inevitable, say poking a hole strategically over a vulnerable timber, then when the collapse happens, demand they be given autocratic power to oversee all buildings or redesign them, “for our own good.” Few will look to the source of the leak and so their conniving will pay dividends.

If we as a people stopped falling for the conniving of evil people, instead punishing them for creating the conditions where human suffering is inevitable, the scheming would stop. Sociopathic individuals operate on a strictly egoistic basis. They care nothing for the suffering of others, and are all too willing to create suffering to benefit themselves, if instead their self interest was severely damaged, they would not engage in it in the first place. In some cases the conniver is a psychopath, and enjoys watching the suffering they inflict on mankind, that they benefit is a bonus to them. In both cases if we look only at where they point we will always be looking in the wrong place and in both cases punishing the conniver would yield benefits for humanity.

Anyone who says or believes, “Never let a tragedy go to waste,” is someone who should never be let anywhere near the reigns of power. By their very admission they are at the least callous individuals and at worst they are evil connivers. If we examine their actions and find that such actions led directly or indirectly to a tragedy, or a host of tragedies, it is clear they are sociopaths or even possibly psychopaths. To allow a psychopath or sociopath access to power is the absolute acme of stupidity. Moreover turning a blind eye to their conniving is not merely stupid but abets the crime. We owe it to our children to root out such nefarious, evil, egoistic people, from government else we and our children must suffer from our indifference, aid and willful ignorance. Always look beyond where the connivers are pointing, instead look to primary causes, did they create conditions where this tragedy is inevitable, if so them why, then act accordingly.

Crime requires a means and motive. If someone tells you they are going to kill you and rape your daughter, you don’t buy them the house next door, in hopes they will see that you are open minded and therefore befriend you, that would be idiotic. If your other neighbor buys them that house and helps them move in… when you are killed and your daughter is raped, it is as much the fault of that malevolent neighbor as the actual murderer and rapist. The conniving neighbor provided the means for the crime knowing the motive was there. When government does the exact same thing, then claims that to “protect you” they need to disarm you, force you to shut up, subject you to intrusive monitoring, while at the same time refusing to identify the criminal, you can be assured those in government are malevolent connivers intent on using human suffering to forward their agenda. The ends do not justify the means, no matter the ends, and especially where the ends and means are evil.

Sincerely,

John Pepin

Human Heartedness

Thursday, October 1st, 2015

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, the Confucian ideal of Human Heartedness, is one we all should emulate. It has been translated into many English words and phrases, but I prefer human heartedness, because it sums up most all of what Confucius wanted to say, as evidenced by his teachings. Those who should emulate human heartedness the most are our leaders since Confucius had the most to say to them. Unfortunately, most people in the West, when they hear “Confucius…” they turn off. The name has been so diminished from it’s rightful stature, from Charlie Chan movies, where the name Confucius became a punch line. Others cannot fathom how anything someone said in 550 BC, could have any relevance to today. They turn their backs on ageless wisdom to their own and our detriment. The human condition and indeed humans themselves have changed very little since then. We still strive for pleasure and avoid pain, we still fall into traps and snares and it is egoistic self interest that baits those pitfalls. Yes, Confucius and his human heartedness have a great deal to say to us today, to ignore such wisdom is to see the pit and yet step into it anyway.

A large component of human heartedness is the Golden Rule… Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Every one of us could benefit from following the golden rule. Better even to double down and hold others to a lower standard then we hold ourselves. It is in our animal nature to hold others to a much higher standard than we hold ourselves and in our civilized nature to hold ourselves to a higher standard. We would benefit by living in a civilization where there can be less laws, less draconian punishments and less government, because we control ourselves from within instead of needing to be controlled from without. Prosperity would increase, since regulations, laws and ordinances are friction to the economy, but become more and more needed the more barbaric the people become. We should all incorporate human heartedness, the golden rule, into our lives.

Human heartedness is all about compassion and empathy. The golden rule is also explicitly about empathy. As I wrote in my last article, compassion and empathy are paramount human attributes, that lead to civilization and away from barbarism. The barbarian has no compassion and no empathy. When an Italian city state was being attacked by the Gauls, Roman dignitaries were called to mediate. One of the Romans asked the Gaul general, “By what right do you lay siege to this city?” The Gaul answered back, “Natural law, that the strong must take from the weak, so the strong can survive and the weak die out…” But what the Gaul didn’t understand is that there are many forms of strength and a multitude of forms of weakness. His was marshal strength, a strength that always has it’s better, he lacked wisdom. We must have compassion and empathy else we become like the Gaul general, strong in might but weak in wisdom.

One of Confucius’ disciples asked, “Does the human hearted man love all?” I suppose referring to Mo Ti’s all embracing love. Confucius said, “No! The human hearted man loves the good and despises the bad.” Clearly Confucius didn’t want good men to turn their faces from evil and so allow it to grow. To be human hearted is to lift up that which is good, in other words… pragmatically benefits individuals, society and culture, while attacking the bad, that which lowers people, harms society and rots the culture. It is obvious that embracing evil as well as good gives evil a leg up, since the good will be fair and honest while evil will use good’s virtues against it. To have a prosperous society where crime is low we need to be human hearted and embrace good while fighting evil.

When talking about leaders Confucius liked to refer to the Sage Kings of “old.” The sage kings led, as Confucius would argue, “by force of personality,” or to put it in modern terms, they led by example. If they wanted the people to be more honest in their business dealings, they would be more honest themselves, and if they wanted the people to stop lusting after each others wives, he would forswear it himself. In that way the leaders of the great society would convince the people to be virtuous. The Duke of Lu asked Confucius one time, how he could get the people to stop lusting after ill gotten profits, women and luxury. Confucius told him to stop doing those things himself and the people would follow. Confucius had to flee Lu state shortly after. The leaders of society want the people to be virtuous, but can hold to the virtue the demand in another, for a single day. If we want our children to live in a safe, prosperous and civil country we must only elect human hearted leaders, who will lead by example.

When Confucius was asked what he would do if he were made emperor, Confucius replied, “I would rectify terms…” or put another way, he would set standards. Standards apply to everyone equally, they create systems where commerce can flourish and they level the playing field for everyone. Today standards are eschewed for regulations, ordinances and laws. Instead of everyone on the same level, regulations are specifically designed so some politically favored group, can get a leg up on an otherwise free exchange. Where a standard is what it is, no matter how politically favored a person is, application of a law is dependent on who the person is. Look at Hillary Clinton’s wiping a subpoenaed email server before turning it in. If you or I did that, what was on it would instantly become irrelevant and we would be charged with a felony, tampering with states evidence. She however was not. A standard is the antithesis of arbitrary rule. For any country to flourish the leaders have to be human hearted, setting and holding everyone, including themselves, to a standard.

There is no question, we are no different than the people who lived before us, oh we might drive cars, talk to people on the other side of the planet, and have put a man on the Moon, but essentially we are the same. We have the same desires, wants and needs. Therefore, wisdom that applied to human beings in 550BC still apply to us today, perhaps more so since we have grown arrogant, egoistic and self aggrandizing, not for our achievements, but for the achievements of those who have come before us. How many among us could create a gasoline engine, having never seen nor heard of one before, yet most of us take them for granted, and look down our noses at those who didn’t have them. Yes, our society, civilization and personal lives would benefit greatly from following the wisdom of Confucius, and becoming more human hearted.

Sincerely,

John Pepin

The Evil of Progressivism

Thursday, September 3rd, 2015

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, a cursory glance at the news today shows the results of progressivism, in bright lights. The news is filled with absurdity. From the now nearly complete genocide of Christians in the Middle East, to the collapse of economies around the world, the news is the greatest indictment of progressivism there could be. American pragmatism teaches that you look at the fruit of an idea or policy to see if it is good or not, and progressivism has shown it produces poison fruit and thus is evil. In every way progressive governments choose evil over good. There is not one example where they choose good over evil today, why is that, because progressivism itself is evil. It is not compatible with humanity, human heartedness, liberty, or enlightenment. Progressivism is a return to the dark ages where the government was ruled by absolute monarchs. Progressivism even has the audacity to seek to control the thoughts of people! It seeks absolute power and uses that power to turn society, the culture and people to evil.

This latest spate of police killings is another example of how progressivism is evil. The progressives who run the government today, have ginned up hatred of the police by their rhetoric, their policies and their own hate. They have led society to a place where murdering a police officer is an act of civil disobedience. They have changed the conversation, from why are so many blacks killed by other blacks, to attacking the very people who are trying to prevent the slaughter! Those cities controlled by progressives have violent crime rates that dwarf war zones! Despite having the toughest gun laws, that are unconstitutional in and of themselves, the murder rate in Detroit, Baltimore, Washington DC and anywhere progressives run government, a human being with dark skin is exponentially more likely to be shot to death than die of anything else! Yet the progressives point at the police who are charged with stopping the slaughter of the inner city. Clearly progressives want blacks slaughtered.

Progressives support planned parenthood’s slaughter of innocent babies. They tax us and give that money to an organization that routinely overcharges for simple procedures, so they can pay their CEO and upper management six figures! Now that video has come out showing a planned parenthood doctor cutting through the face of a live baby boy to extract his brain, with no anesthesia, the evil of planned parenthood cannot be denied, yet progressives in both parties still support it! Since progressives cannot claim ignorance anymore, yet still support it, they must also support infanticide and torturing a baby to death. By any measure, that is pure evil, and those that support evil are themselves evil. Since that is what is going on, and they know it,by definition… progressives are evil.

It is undeniable that Christianity has ceased to exist in it’s birthplace. Christians have been rounded up, slaughtered by burning to death, children have been crucified, Christians have been beheaded on video and Christian girls as young as 5 years old have been sold into sex slavery and raped multiple times a day. These crimes against humanity are going on as you read this article! No human being with an atom of empathy could call it anything but evil. Not only evil but open and braggadocio evil! Yet the progressives in both Europe and the US… REFUSE TO ALLOW PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS ASYLUM!!! Progressives demand the Christians who face such horrific crimes, because they are Christians, simply accept their fate! Their actions prove progressives support and condone the genocide of Christians! There can be no other conclusion… genocide is evil, and those that support genocide are evil, therefore it follwos… progressives are evil.

Under the watch of progressives the economy of the world is melting down. They have printed trillions of dollars, Yen, Euros, Renminbi, etc… to hide the results of their policies, despite the overwhelming evidence that doing so always leads to economic catastrophe. There is not one example in economic history where money printing has ended well. This time however, it is not one nation that has printed it’s currency to oblivion, but all countries! Never before in human history have so many countries printed so much money to prop up their economies. The printing has inflated bubbles around the world, it has also warped the flow of capital to unproductive enterprises, due to the pernicious incentives of low cost loans. As we watch the stock markets, bond markets and businesses collapse in slow motion before our eyes, and with them our hard earned savings evaporate… we have the progressives to blame. They run the banking system, our governments and the media that reports on them.

In every way progressives have chosen evil over good, they denied God three times at the democratic convention, then booed him. Therefore they must support Lucifer. The National Socialists got their ideas from American progressives, especially the ideas of racial purity and breeding supermen. Progressives choose death over life every chance they get, the death of babies, the death of Christians, the death of Jews, the death of liberty and the death of capitalism… are all their policies, and the results are plain for anyone to see. Our civilization is in disarray, our society is coming apart at the seams and our economy is melting down and with it our standard of living. Progressives have visited catastrophe on us, it produces poison fruit, but how many are awake enough to recognize it? How many of us will believe the progressive media that it is the fault of people with no power? How many more times will progressives visit evil on us… before we learn? Or are we simply too stupid to learn?

Sincerely,

John Pepin

Justice is a State of Mind not a State of Being

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, justice is simply treating everyone the same, to argue otherwise is to twist wrong into right by spurious means. Justice is not to force everyone to be, act, or think the same, it is not to give everyone the same stuff… it is to treat everyone the same. It doesn’t seem like that is such a difficult concept to understand but it is not understood by most people. They have been fooled into thinking justice is a state of being and not a state of mind. We have been deceived into thinking justice is some concept of economic equality, (a state of being), when this is only a spurious way to trick people into acting and thinking, unjustly. To be a rational maximizer, or put another way, civilized, a person has to be sufficiently mature and thoughtful to grasp this basic concept of justice, rejecting those sophist ways the elite enforce injustice, by calling it justice. Our compliance with their absurdity, even if most who honestly believe justice is a state of being, creates a fundamentally unjust society, where people cannot leave the station they are born into, which is true economic, social and cultural injustice. In other words, unless we wake up and wake up our friends, our children and grandchildren will forever be trapped in the station they are born into, living in a fog of fallacy, with no ability to transcend it, regardless of their personal merit.

Justice is equality in treatment not equality in some physical instance. What if the elite claimed blond hair is the best and it is unjust for anyone to be burdened with brown or black hair? Would it then follow, that the government had a legitimate role to play in improving the lives of it’s citizens, by forcing everyone to dye their hair blond? What if the elite managed to convince the people that blond hair is indeed the best, would it be just then? What about if government forced blonds to shave their heads? No, of course it wouldn’t be. Justice is not a state of being but a state of mind. To conflate the two is a path to injustice. It is however, a sure way to trick people into doing unjust actions, while thinking they are actually being just.

Like the terrorist who believes he is blowing himself up and killing innocents to advance the interests of God. He doesn’t examine the absurdity of the notion, he simply follows the orders of the guy who would never blow himself up, and in the end advances the goals of Satan. The ostensibly pious person damages God’s ends and advances the ends of Lucifer while all the time thinking he serves God. Ironic as it can be, people can be easily tricked into doing the opposite of what they seek, by the diabolical means of fooling someone with sophistry. When we don’t think an argument all the way to the end, we can be tricked into the opposite of what we want, and end up doing injustice when we intend justice.

To be civilized, is to think things through and take concepts to their logical conclusion, to do otherwise is to be a member of a mob. Unthinking brutes who act on orders instead of logic and a sense of right. Do you suppose the Nazis thought they were evil? No, they thought what they were doing was good. People cannot be convinced to do evil, for evil’s sake, the packaging of evil must appear to be good. Yes, there are a few psychopaths out there who would happily serve Beelzebub, but the throngs of humanity seek goodness, and eschew evil. To get them to serve evil requires spurious logic and sophist arguments. Twisting justice into injustice by claiming justice is a state of being and not a state of mind, is just as absurd as tricking a child into thinking that committing several mortal sins at the same time, will get him or her to heaven and serve the goals of God, when it is the exact opposite of the truth.

Justice is clearly a state of mind and not a state of being. To force people to be the same, economically, socially, culturally or in any other way, is effecting their state of being. Moreover, to effect one’s state of being, forcing equality in some state of being, requires as a prerequisite that an injustice be done, in other words, some must be treated differently than others, which as we have already shown, is the definition of injustice. If you treat everyone you meet the same, with gratitude for their help, courteously recognizing their humanity, and avoiding hurting those who society tell us are “the other,” you are acting justly. If you visit evil on someone because their state of being is other than what the elite have defined as “fair,” then you are acting unjustly, and no amount of twisted logic can make that wrong a right.

Sincerely,

John Pepin

Appeasement of Aggression

Sunday, June 8th, 2014

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, you cannot appease an aggressor, appeasement only exacerbates aggression. This fact is true in every facet of life, both personal and political, micro and macro. Those who would take from us have already dehumanized us in their minds, and nothing we can do will change that, short of defeating them. In fact, trying to befriend someone who has dehumanized you only proves to the aggressor you are not as valuable as he, nor is your opinion as meaningful as his. This is a fundamental fact of aggression. We are all faced with aggressors in our lives. Those of us that placidly back off and cede ground worsen the aggression, those of us that try to make friends with those who seek to take from us, only prove to the aggressor we are unworthy to have whatever they want. The only two ways to stop an aggressor is to defeat him or her decisively, and that only works as long as you have the plurality of power, or leave the situation entirely.

Taking a person’s stuff is bad, but taking a person’s children, or humanity is far worse. Stuff can be replaced, rebuilt or simply done without, but our children and our humanity are fundamental to our person hood. Taking a person’s humanity can come in various ways, slavery is one way, forcing someone to believe something they do not is another… there are many ways to take someone’s humanity, all of them evil. Taking someone’s property is a lesser evil but evil none the less. If an aggressor gets away with taking the property of someone, that aggressor is motivated to do it again, to someone else. The cycle continues until the aggressor is dead or someone stands up to them.

Once someone has dehumanized another in their mind there is nothing the victim can do to change the mind of the aggressor. No amount of nice words, kind actions, charity or platitudes will convince an aggressor of the humanity of his intended victim. In fact they will only prove the unworthiness of the victim. Once someone has dehumanized another they must keep believing that, else in their own mind, they are bad. None of us wants to think we ourselves are evil, and so we continue doing things we should recognize are bad… to keep up the fiction in our own minds that we ourselves are not bad. The more someone tries to change our minds, the more resistant we become to change, again, because to change our minds will prove we were wrong in the first place and that is simply not acceptable. It is called cognitive dissonance.

When asked by a Roman why he was besieging an Etruscan city the Gaul king said, ‘Natural law, that the strong should take from the weak so the strong may live on…’ We are masters of rationalizing our actions, wants and needs. The aggressor never sees him or herself as bad, they manipulate in their own minds the facts, to show that they deserve to enslave that other, steal from him, or rape her, etc… even the most violent people often believe they are the victims. Their violence is merely the actions of the aggrieved. The aggressor often claims, (believes), he or she is the victim. This helps justify their actions at least in their own minds. Society often feeds into this false meme. When someone who has a violent past beats up someone, people shake their heads and say, “he’s at it again.” But when the victim kills an aggressor the same people who would have merely shook their heads at the violence, now become enraged and ask, “Couldn’t you have just run away?” We unknowingly feed the victim belief of those who are evil in this way.

If we want to live in a civilized world we have to start acting civilized. Ignoring aggression by others against others is not civilized it is why bullies get away with bullying. All it takes for evil to get a foothold is for good people to turn a blind eye, and we do that more often than not. When aggression is directed at us we must stand and fight. To back down is not civilized it is barbaric, because it empowers the aggressor to misuse others in the future who, if they back down too, will prove to the aggressor the rightness of his or her actions. Mere thieves must be punished, but those who would dehumanize others must be stepped on, as examples to everyone that aggression is not acceptable in a civilized world. Moreover, allowing the aggressor to play the victim only empowers the aggressor, and dis-empowers the victim. We can stop promoting aggression in our world and thereby live on a civilized planet, or we can keep placating aggressors, and eventually all of us will become victims and the entire world will descend into barbarism. The choice is ours, as it always is, the choice is not easy, it never is, but it is still ours to make, it is the price we pay for free will…

Sincerely,

John Pepin

Logically Consistent Measure of Right Versus Wrong

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, what most of us consider wrong, depends on whether we identify with one or the other actor. While this is perfectly human, being subjective, it is not a good measure of good and evil. A better way would be to find an objective measure that is not emotionally dependent but logically consistent. A great deal of the arguments we have in our society can be traced back to this fundamental truism. Government and law would be well served to move past this archaic means of measuring right from wrong. Imagine if we did move our legal system and cultural ethos beyond this pernicious paradigm? Much of the energy we now waste arguing based on our subjective emotions, could be turned to productive discussion, evil would be struck a powerful blow, and people could live much more freely.

Who we identify with says a lot about us. Some people believe abortion is perfectly acceptable while others believe abortion is a terrific evil. Both positions today are largely dependent on who the person identifies with. Those who identify with the woman favor abortion, and those who identify with the baby, are pro life. This fairly obvious observation applies to most of the questions we face as a people. Even questions that bring war into the world can be examined this way. Who you or I believe is right depends on who we identify with.

Let’s face facts, we are not going to change human nature, and to try only shows arrogance and presumption. I cede the fact, we are not going to change, mature or evolve, out of who and what we are. That is not possible. As a people however, we can grow out of our individual dogmatism to find a more human hearted and logical metric, with which to gauge right from wrong. This is only possible if the leaders of society subject their own prejudices to the test. To accomplish that would require limiting the power of the elite at the individual level and empowering a wide range of elite as a group.

There is a stream of philosophical thought in which an action can be measured by the good versus the harm it brings. This is pure sophistry because it takes the individual’s sovereign right out of the equation. All human beings have a right to exist, live as human beings and have property, that supersedes anyone else’s right to enjoyment, food, medicine or even harm. If a scientist came up with a machine that would cure cancer at all stages, but as an input it required a child be put in it and tortured for months, as the innocent child dies of pain overdose, his or her body would emit a substance the machine would then refine that would cure a thousand cases of cancer, would it be right or wrong? What if it would cure ten million? There are those who would identify with the cancer patient and say yes! Those who identify with the child would shudder and scream NO!

Instead of making our decisions on an emotional basis we should strive to take emotions out of it and instead try to use the logic if individual liberty. If a thing harms and individual, even if it brings great benefit to another, it is wrong… no matter the level of benefit. To say a thing is good, even though it does great evil to someone, because it brings great good to another… is selfishness writ large. The good from any action cannot be judged good if it comes at cost to another. What I am saying is that the individual’s sovereign rights must not be infringed on, else that action is wrong, pure and simple.

If we could move as a society, away from measuring good and evil based on some sophist calculation of the good it brings one against the harm it brings another, then we would have made a great leap in human understanding. The rights of the individual must be protected and cannot be measured by another. No one is saintly enough to make that calculation. As in our fictitious machine that cures cancer, the right of the person to life liberty and happiness cannot be trumped by the “good” that would come to millions, even billions of OTHERS, by stepping on the rights of that person. Protecting the individual, my good friends, is the logically consistent measure of right and wrong I would have us replace the emotionally dependent one we use today, that of who we identify with.

The Religion of Socialism

Monday, October 21st, 2013

Dear Friends,

It seems to me that socialism is a religion. The committed socialist behaves exactly as if he or she is a member of a cult. A body where their God is the collective, to be sure, but a religion nonetheless. If we think of socialism and socialists in this way it explains a great deal of the twentieth century. This ability to understand the mind of socialists, gives those who don’t follow their religion the ability to effect the future, in a way that allows humanity to escape the horrors of the last century. Perhaps this understanding could give us leverage over those who are falling into the socialist sphere, such that they could be convinced of the true religious nature of socialism, or at least plant a seed of truth in some, that may sprout into a hedge… protecting us all from the sinister winds of socialism.

Socialism is based in the Christian faith. If you read Acts, Chapter 4, Verse 32-37 you can see that Marx’s famous saying, “From those… to those,” has a basis in that scripture. Marx’s father was a Jew who converted to Lutheranism. As such Marx would certainly know scripture. From this we can see that socialism is a perversion of the Christian faith. Further it becomes obvious that socialism could never have gained adherents among any people other than Christians. Since Socialism is a misreading of the Christian faith no one can deny that there is not at least some religious component.

If we examine the actions of socialists we see their fanaticism. Whenever someone disagrees with the socialists they treat the disbeliever as a heretic. Look at the way Lenin and Hitler, among others, have been worshiped as prophets. Socialists have murdered millions of people, simply because those victims disagreed with the socialist ideal, or for matters of expediency. The true socialist is a zealot. There is no bridge they will not cross and then burn, if it furthers their push for socialism. These are the actions of a religious fanatic, not a scientifically minded pragmatist.

All the high minded claims of the socialists are nothing but empty rhetoric designed to manipulate those who are weak minded or lost. The peasant who joins the party and engages in the most heinous atrocities, is weak minded, while the scientists who justifies those barbarities, are lost. Since, as I have written many times before, human beings need something to believe in, those who are lost will turn to a belief that is always pernicious. In this the scientist is especially vulnerable.

Many scientists revel in their faith in a mechanistic materialist nature of the universe. In order to have a mechanistic, materialistic view of existence, one must eschew the concept of an almighty God, which is an anathema to them. In this, they demonstrate their hubris… and their ignorance. Since a scientists who believes in a mechanistic, materialistic version of the universe, must disbelieve in a creator, they search frantically looking for a replacement. The socialist is happy to provide that replacement in the form of socialism.

Socialism takes the place of a belief in God, replacing it with atheism, or in other words… a hatred of God. The State then fills the void this hollows out in their souls. This is why so many absurdities are professed by the socialist scientists. The logically minded scientist socialist ignores all facts and steadfastly adhere to their doctrine instead. But, science is supposed to make predictions, test those predictions, and if observation disagrees with theory, theory is tossed out for one that better explains observation. To the socialist scientist… theory trumps observation.

Examples abound, the fiction of anthropogenic climate change, ignoring the atrocities committed by socialists and a blind faith in Keynesian economics, among others. The socialist worships a notion, and anyone who disparages that notion, is met with violence and derision. The Muslim who beheads an infidel, shows no more religious zealotry than the socialist who herds human beings into the killing fields, or the scientist who rationalizes it. To commit such atrocities against humanity, requires a deep religious fanaticism, fueled by a hatred for God. This is why Obama was so willing to cut the baby, (the US economy), in half… by refusing to negotiate with republicans at all. To him it is a spiritual imperative never to bend to such heretics.

If we want to effect the future for the better we need to understand the facts. Socialists are fanatics who will brooch no logical argument, all the while claiming to be the logical open minded ones, and will put no limit on their actions. History teaches us this. Socialist rhetoric belies their fanaticism. Fanatics cannot be reasoned with, they must be defeated, and never allowed near the reigns of government. Those who are not members of that pernicious and evil cult, but who are falling into line, must be shown the true nature of it. It is our duty. Remember… Jesus said there would be many false prophets after him and many would come to ruin because of them. In this the socialists are the very epitome.

Our Bright Future

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, I usually warn about potential threats to our liberty and prosperity, but that gives a skewed impression of my true beliefs about the future. I do see many possible dangers facing us, some are from our government(s) running amok and others are foreign in nature, while they have the potential of lowering us and our children to serfs and slaves, the future in the long term, is bright. Mankind has never advanced in a straight line. The progress in human understanding has always been through fits and starts. Sometimes reversing direction for a long time but always eventually getting back on track. The Dark ages were just such an example. Mankind taken as a whole, is a complex system, complex systems have a way of finding equilibrium. This equilibrium of the complex system that is humanity, is generally to improve the standard of living, increase the liberty of individuals and limit the power of political favor as well. In the long, or perhaps short term, this bodes well for the future of humanity.

If we look back at the arc of human history we can see that people’s lives used to be short, violent and brutish, (to use another’s phrase). This is still true in some parts of the World. The evils that humanity has seen are largely a result of our own ignorance and self indulgence. Slavery for example has largely been eliminated from human existence. Unfortunately, there are those who enslave others still, but they are almost universally criminal and not State sanctioned. This is a huge step for mankind. That slavery is becoming more and more detested, by people the World over, is a sure sign there is hope for us.

Thrasymachus said that most people want to live their lives in peace. This is true enough but he went on to say that the great men want power over others. This always manifests itself in the form of political power. The “great men” that he spoke of were and are the political elite. It is human nature to seek power over others. This is the thesis of Freud’s concept of the id. Irrational, lusting after whatever the id wants. Power being at the top. That human governments have put in place checks and balances to limit and minimize this aspect of our nature is another sign that we are able to learn. That the majority of us want to live in peace is another source of hope.

The founding of the United States and the subsequent writing of our Constitution was a seminal event in human history. It was an evolutionary step in limiting the power of the political elite. Rome had limited the elite through the use of the Consular system, which worked well for them for hundreds of years, but eventually failed. Ancient Greece used the Ostracism to limit the power of the elite to some avail, but in the writing of a constitution the power of government was enumerated in a written document, open for all to see, but most importantly… enforceable. The true innovation in the American Constitution was stating overtly, that the power of government comes from the people, not that the people’s liberty comes from the government.

Of course the elite have always sought to free themselves of whatever shackles that are placed on them. This is why there have been so many failures of governmental systems. This is as inevitable as the sun rising in the east. The attempts of the elite to throw off any limitations on their power are the reason humanity has retreated so often. We can expect this to continue as long as there are people. That we have advanced so far is reason for optimism. Perhaps we will loose our liberty to the elite today but it would be foolish to believe future generations will not again win it back. The nature of complex systems are that they have long tailed events. Unlikely happenings, that change the system profoundly, and sometimes in kind.

Capitalism has proven itself to be the most efficient means to advance mankind’s humanity to man, as well as generate prosperity, whenever and wherever it is used. This knowledge is like a genie escaping from a bottle, it cannot be put back in. Limited government through constitutionalism has proven itself to be the best way to insure that the elite don’t misuse the power invested in them. Western Philosophy, while often nonsensical, has brought us the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment and constitutionalism as well. Eventually teaching the basic truth that all men are created equal. The future of mankind is bright. Our children, or maybe great great grand children, will inherit the stars. When that happens humanity will have suffered, loved and matured. Isn’t that the way all things grow? To start as an infant, grow to be self indulgent adolescents and eventually to mature into productive adults. Hsun Ching said the congenital nature of man is evil and that the good in us is a learned trait. I expect humanity is no different… we are learning to be good, and good we will eventually be.

Opinion, Violence and Civilization

Thursday, August 29th, 2013

Dear Friends,

It seems to me, the moment opinion is met with death threats, there is no longer civilization in the land. What had been civilization has now become anarchy, and until the threat of death for opinion is removed, there will be no civilization… with all that portends. It should be clear to everyone, it is not the right role of government to empower those that meet opinion with death threats, because government’s role is to foster peaceful civilization, so the people can go about their days without being molested or having their property stolen. Those that meet opinion with violence are to be vilified, and if possible, incarcerated. They are the very real manifestation of a mortal threat to civilization and should be treated as such.

The role of right government is to create a framework so that commerce and social living can go on with minimal impediment. This is one of the reasons Machiavelli said that a stable tyranny is preferable, to the people, than an unstable democracy. A stable tyranny is just that… stable, while an unstable democracy is, well… unstable. People cannot walk down the street alone in an unstable society, women and children are always in danger from the criminal element, and property is up for grabs where instability reigns. While on the other hand, people prosper in a stable society, a woman can walk down the street or ride a bus alone in safety, and children can play without fear of predators. Clearly, from this we can see, the right role of government is to foster a stable society and shun that which makes it unstable.

Civilization itself is dependent on the free exchange of information. Much of that information is in the form of opinion. If certain opinions are met with threats of death, especially if they are carried out, they shut down the free flow of information. By definition and by design. Civilizations that have no debate quickly stagnate and die unless there is a source of outside income. Stopping the flow of information necessarily staunches debate. The reason staunching of debate is so bad for a society, is because various societies are intermingled, and in competition. They are usually designated by national boundaries, but sometimes cross those boundaries, the Kurds for example. Those countries that stifle debate, fall behind those that do not, in every metric of good. For example, poor performing economies, they quickly become tyrannies, and their state of general education declines, among many other negatives.

Those who are insecure in their beliefs are always those who seek to shut down the opinions of others. They unconsciously know the weakness of their arguments and instead of backing them up with logic, which is their opinion’s weakness, they back it up with violence. This means that no one in the debate, believes that the position who threatens violence is correct… even those that argue for it! If they themselves know there is no argument that can be made for their position, but have too much hubris to cede it, violence is their only resort. By doing this they discredit not only themselves but their very movement! That is not to say, once violence is started one shouldn’t protect themselves, it is natural rights, to meet violence with violence, but is far different from threatening death for opinion, that is meeting words with violent action. Words can be ignored but violent action cannot be.

Where civilization is in decline and instability rears it’s head… poverty and want can never be far behind. Those that threaten the stability of society and undermine it’s growth, are in fact leading directly to our civilization’s destruction, and therefore are a direct threat to us, our legacy and our children. The best thing to do, is to immediately point at the offender, whenever violence is offered for opinion. Let’s face it, offering violence for opinion, is evil, and if we all point at evil, evil cannot hide behind platitudes and spurious ad homonym attacks. The cumulative light of all of us, shining our own little beam on evil, must wither and dessicate it. Like a vampire in the old movies… evil can only live in darkness.

Sincerely,

John Pepin
